A Very Special Gift for Mum
In light of Mother's Day, I'd like to share a story about the book I created for my Mum's 70th birthday. I wanted the book to be about her life, with some family heritage information included and written as if she was telling the story. I also wanted it to be a surprise gift. For months prior to her birthday, I would ask her questions, hoping she wouldn't catch on to what I was up to. My Dad had passed 10 years before, so I knew I had to glean the information directly from Mum.
On the day of her birthday get-together with family & friends, I read out a poem about her life that was written by a close friend and then handed her the book. So many people looked through the book that day and every one of them told me what a very special gift it was.
One of my favourite parts of the book is the story about how she met Dad. Even Mum's own sister didn't know that story!
I'm also very proud to learn of my Great Grandad serving in WW1 as part of the Australian Light Horse Regiment. You can't help but smile when you read about his antics while serving; I just can't imagine him as the character he obviously was!
Two years ago, my Mum suffered a massive heart attack and stroke; thankfully she has recovered quite well. This life-changing event for our family proved to all of us how valuable that book truly is. Had I not taken the time to ask Mum questions about her photos and life when I did, all these wonderful stories would have been lost forever.
Happy Mother's Day from all of us at FOREVER!
