Art of the Smartphone Photo: An Introduction
Welcome to my new smartphone photography series. Oh, wait a minute – my camera has already spoken for me! That photo is my neighbor’s doormat full of pine needles. I went next door to borrow a stick of butter, saw that beautiful pattern, pulled out my ever-present iPhone, and took a picture. Now that print hangs in the entryway of their home to welcome visitors – a happy ending.
That’s what I love most about my smartphone. It’s practically a free camera. Even if my iPhone didn’t have a camera built into it, I would still be carrying it around. The fact that there is a world-class camera seamlessly attached makes it the most fun camera ever. However, what makes it the best camera ever is that I always have it by my side to snap and share pictures instantly!
Apple recently announced that iPhone users take over 1 trillion photos ever year. That’s a lot of photos! Don’t get me wrong – the cameras aren’t perfect, but there are tons of ways to get the most out of every picture you snap. In my experience, it can be much easier to carry around a small rectangle in my pocket than have a multi-thousand dollar cinderblock (DSLR camera) hanging around my neck.
DSLR cameras are great and capture incredible photos, but for the everyday photographer, they may not be too practical. Regardless of the camera you own, you must know how to take full advantage of its technology so you can capture the moment whenever an opportunity arises. And there is a ton of technology to take advantage of with smartphone cameras.
That’s my plan. In tiny increments, I’m going to walk you through how to get the most out of your smartphone camera so that you can capture wonderful photos everywhere you go. I will be sharing fun, weekly lessons to help you become not just a better smartphone photographer, but a better photographer overall! If you’ve ever met me, heard me speak, or watched my webinars, you know that if it’s not fun then I'm not interested. And, like I said, the smartphone camera is the most fun camera ever made. Period.
Speaking of fun, or at least funny, here’s a photo that I probably never would have taken if I didn’t always have a smartphone with me. I was cleaning out Alexander’s lunchbox and received notification that he was never going to eat hummus, ever. Good storytelling photo, and it now lives in my FOREVER account.
